Chaos came to Fife’s roads as maintenance brought the Forth Road Bridge and its surrounds to a standstill.
Motorists faced queues of up to four hours as traffic on the M90 came to a halt.
The work, to resurface the carriageway, had been advertised beforehand by the bridge operators.
However, despite the forewarning and continued updates throughout the day on social media, drivers continued to head for the crossing, leading to tailbacks several miles long.
Adam Earl from Dunfermline took to Facebook to say: “Think I’m going to be sleeping on the Forth Road Bridge tonight.” And The Courier’s Motoring Editor Jack McKeown said on Facebook: “It’s taken four hours to get from Edinburgh Airport to about half a mile from the Forth Road Bridge.”
The official bridge Twitter account was also inundated by drivers stuck in tailbacks, many wanting to know how long it would take to reach their destination.
The resurfacing work was expected to have been completed by Monday morning, although a contraflow is expected to be in place on Monday night and throughout the week from 7pm to 6am.
