Winter celebrations light up the skies above Angus

A number of Angus and Mearns winter celebrations got under way in an explosion of colour at the weekend.

In Carnoustie, the torchlight parade and fireworks display attracted around 4,000 people for its “biggest year yet.”

Meanwhile, the bonfire and music drew more than 900 people to Kirriemuir Hill, organised by the local Round Table.

And Stonehaven welcomed around 5,000 people to its superhero-themed event at Mineralwell Park last night.

Carnoustie’s celebrations are staged with assistance from the coastguard and local man Lindsay Martin has been an organiser for 35 years.

He said: “It was probably the biggest fireworks display we’ve ever had and it was attended by about 4,000 people. Everyone was on their best behaviour and there was not a bit of bother.

“We got a good response from people turning up to offer their help, and even the weather was on our side it just started raining as we finished.”

Kirriemuir Round Table organises the Kirrie Hill event, with music provided by musicians from DD8 Music and refreshments served by the local Scout group.

Round Tabler Russell Williams said: “It must have been the biggest bonfire we’ve had to date and I would reckon we had about 900 people there.

“I’d like to thank all the local people who donated towards the cost of the fireworks, and the youth groups who helped a lot.

“The Scout group sold all the hot dogs and the Guy was made by the Beavers. The rain held off till 8pm and it was a great night.”

Chairman Neil Entwistle said the fireworks display alone cost £2,000 to put on, and future events will continue to rely on community goodwill.

“The event is only made possible by the hard work of the guys in the Round Table fundraising through the year and by the kind support of local businesses who contribute firewood and fencing,” he said.

“This is one of the few local, independently financed and run bonfires left in a town of Kirriemuir’s size. Being independent means the event needs lots of community support.”

There were fireworks of a different kind elsewhere in Angus, as Montrose saw the Mopocalypse music event staged at the town hall on Friday and Saturday.

In Brechin, Fubar played the Monster’s Ball on Saturday at the City Club, organised by community group Bravo Brechin.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service reported no fireworks-related callouts across Angus and the Mearns.
