Broughty Ferry has been named the second best neighbourhood in the UK thanks to the people-passion of its residents.
It was the only Scottish neighbourhood to be nominated for an Academy of Urbanism Award, but was pipped to the title of Great Neighbourhood by Holbeck Urban Village, a regenerated historic neighbourhood in Leeds.
Assessors praised the Dundee neighbourhood for being an energetic, involved community that is an exemplar for neighbourhood planning.
However, it was the people-passion that the academy responded to most, in particular the partnerships generated between groups such as the city council, community council, traders and church groups.
Lead assessor for the award, Richard Guise, said: “Imaginative partnerships have ensured that the secondary school has become the neighbourhood hub and that community liaison is directly linked to the council.
“At the heart of this attractive seafront neighbourhood is its lively mix of uses, activities and people.”
Assessors met several organisations representing the area, including Broughty In Bloom, the Broughty Ferry Traders’ Association as well as councillors and the community council.
The judges also took in several sights while reaching their decision, including the railway station, Grove Academy, Barnhill Rock Garden and LocalMotion Land Train.
Broughty Ferry Traders’ Association secretary Sandro Paladini said: “The traders’ association, Dundee City Council and other bodies in the area have been working towards this point and were delighted when Broughty Ferry was chosen as the only Scottish town to make the final three of the national competition.
“To be seen as being the best neighbourhood within the whole of Scotland is an extraordinary accolade and one that’s very deserving of the efforts that the community puts in to Broughty Ferry.
“Broughty Ferry Traders’ Association are privileged, and have been for many years, to work with other bodies in the community to put on events like Broughty Ferry gala week and the Christmas lights night.
“It’s events like these and many others which form an exceptional community spirit within the area and that was clearly recognised by the judges when they came to view and assess Broughty Ferry.”
