Children have been given the chance to try out the Overgate centre’s modern approach to Christmas grottos and it seems they like it.
There was controversy when it emerged the centre had dispensed with the normal setup for Santa, in favour of a live video link with Lapland.
The 21st Century communication sensation has replaced the ages-old Santa’s knee as children find out whether they have been naughty or nice.
All the parents The Courier spoke to enjoyed the show for putting a high-tech twist on the tradition.
Shannon Sellars took son Lucas (four months) and said: “It’s really exciting, there’s way more for them than there is at the more traditional ones.
“The lights and the excitement, it’s really good for the wee ones.”
‘Skype Shack’ is still visited by St Nick during the 15-minute show, and Santa’s elves are in attendance too.
The yuletide treat is free, but donations are taken for charity Help For Kids.
Claire Lizanec was there with son Aaron, 1.
“It was great, he was a bit shocked,” she said. “There was definitely some shock when he came through the door.
“It’s the first time Aaron has ever seen Santa for real. I love it, it’s brilliant for the kids.”
Jimmy and Tanya Balfour’s daughter Layla, 2, seemed to prefer the new treat.
“She loved it, she was really scared last year and this one went a lot better,” said Tanya.
“She got really involved, was giving out high fives. We liked seeing Santa too, it was great fun.”
Jenna Mitchell said her daughter Poppy, 2, had also enjoyed her visit.
“It’s really good, she was excited. Last year we went and she screamed straight through.
“This is more of a fun thing.”
Centre manager Malcolm Angus said: “We wanted to give children (and adults) something new and exciting this year at the Overgate. The Skype with Santa experience is just that.
“We have worked with the team who are creating the Skype experience before and they are so animated that it’s hard not to get caught up in their excitement.”
