Police launched a massive crackdown on housebreaking across Courier Country at the weekend.
Dozens of officers from Tayside hit break-in hotspots in an attempt to discourage criminals seeking to use darker nights as cover for their theft.
Youth volunteers also played a role in the operation codenamed After Dark handing out leaflets to make the public aware of precautions they should take.
Detective Inspector Andrew Patrick, who led the operation, said: “We understand that housebreaking crimes, including those from sheds, garages and outbuildings, is a concern within our communities especially at this time of year.”
Officers conducted patrols on Saturday night around residential areas that have been particularly affected by housebreaking. They were hoping to deter housebreakers, as well as make residents more aware of precautions they can take to avoid their homes being broken into.
“Through operation After Dark, we want to provide residents with information and advice on home security to help prevent them becoming a victim of crime and to keep people safe,” Detective Inspector Patrick said.
“In addition, I want to reassure the public that we carry out targeted action against those who commit housebreakings.
“We have dedicated teams of officers who actively investigate any housebreakings in our area, arrest offenders and recover property so it can be reunited with its rightful owners,” he added.
The latest figures provided by Police Scotland, Tayside Division, show that detection rates for housebreaking have risen in recent months.
Detective Inspector Patrick added: “The public can assist us in our efforts to tackle housebreaking in Tayside by ensuring they have home security measures in place and that they report any suspicious activity around homes, businesses and outbuildings to us immediately.
“By working with the support of the public and partner agencies, we will send out a clear message to thieves that we will identify you, find you and bring you before the courts.”
Members of the Police Scotland Youth Volunteers also assisted professional police with the operation.
