Angus Council has installed a gate to stop people driving along a footpath leading to Arbroath Skatepark following several complaints.
Cars are not allowed to use the wide footpath leads to the skatepark at West Links.
However, despite signs clearly stating vehicles are prohibited, and advice from community wardens, people have continued to drive right up to the park.
The gate was locked for the first time by council staff on Monday night.
A council spokesperson said: “We received reports of cars driving along this road and parking on the grass beside the skatepark.
“Our community wardens spoke with the drivers to remind them of the ‘no unauthorised vehicle’ notice at the entrance to the road and that they were causing a potential safety hazard to pedestrians.
“Unfortunately that approach did not deter the drivers from continuing to drive along the road, and we had to take the decision to install a locked gate.”
The move has been welcomed by Jillian Low, chairwoman of Arbroath Skatepark committee, who said it would help improve the safety of people walking along the path.
She said: “I was aware that some people have been driving to the skatepark in their cars and parking. I am fully in favour of the gate being locked. The skatepark has to be safe for pedestrians.
“There are notices up which say ‘no unauthorised access’ beyond this point.
“So people doing it are doing it illegally it’s clearly a footpath, not a road. The gate being locked will help everyone’s safety it’s only a five-minute walk along the path.”
Jillian added the drivers had been one of the very few negative aspects since the skatepark opened in October.
“The project has been a wonderful success, and it’s been just tremendous to see the park being so well used and hear all the positive feedback since its completion,” she added.
“People driving on the path is one issue that caused concern for other users of the area sometimes it’s been parents who park there while their children are using the park.
“Happily the positives outweigh the negatives of the facility and it has indeed proved to be an asset to the town.”
