The son of Duncan MacBain and Margaret Mitchell, he was born in Perthshire and educated at Perth Academy. He served in the Fleet Air Arm from 1944-1946 and went on to take an MA with Honours in political economy and modern history at St Andrews University. Mr MacBain worked in the Board of Trade before emigrating to Canada in 1968 to join the provincial government of New Brunswick. He became the state’s longest serving deputy minister of finance under three successive ministers (1974-1989). He is survived by his wife, Norma, three sons and six grandchildren in Canada and two brothers and two sisters in Scotland.
