Visitors to a live music event in Angus will have seen the effects of recent vandalism at “great public expense”.

Kirriemuir’s Live in The Den day of gigs and entertainment is a yearly draw to the town and its central den area but revellers may have seen some damage during their visit.

PC Gail Beattie showed The Courier the extent of a broken wall and ornamental rock face in The Den.

Youngsters had been making a den at the bottom of a rock face, near the playground, and were fortunate not to be there when rocks weighing about a ton fell.

A great deal of the retaining wall at the Gairie Burn has been damaged, with the stones landing in the burn.

A council spokesperson said: “We reported the vandalism to police community wardens last week. We will need to make repairs to the wall along the burn and the rock face in The Den.

“This vandalism has not only caused a potentially dangerous situation with a number of trees being dislodged causing rocks to fall, the repairs will be at great public expense at times of severe budget cuts.

“I would urge anyone who has any information about this latest incident, or who wishes to discuss any issues relating to vandalism to call the council ACCESS Line on 08452 777 778, or contact the police.”

Police confirmed the vandalism.

A spokeswoman said: “‘Police Scotland received a report of vandalism at The Den in Kirriemuir on August 12. Anyone who knows who is responsible should contact police on 101.”
