Dundee United striker David Goodwillie and former midfielder Dave Bowman have pledged to join a world record-breaking knitting attempt at Tannadice next month.

Norma Duncan, organiser of the Big Knit 2013, travelled to the club’s St Andrews training base on Thursday to meet the players and see them being put through their paces.

She said: “I didn’t even attempt to join in. It was pouring with rain and when they were lying on the ground it just looked miserable.

“The whole thing was great fun and I am experiencing lots of new things in my life through this project.”

Norma has never been to an adult football match before but has been invited to Saturday’s game against St Johnstone, where she will enjoy hospitality.

She said: “Dundee United have been fantastic making this all happen. They say I’ll become a football fan after the game, but that remains to be seen.

“Hopefully having footballers join us will attract other people who wouldn’t otherwise get involved in knitting. This whole thing has grown like topsy and now I just really want to smash this record.”

The Big Knit 2013 will take place at Tannadice on Sunday September 8 with doors opening at 2pm for a 3pm knit-off.

Weather will not be a problem as the stadium seating is covered, and anyone can join the event.

There will also be a charity collection which will be donated to local Alzheimer’s sufferers.
