Tragic Mikaeel Kular died from internal bleeding and peritonitis, it has been revealed.
The three-year-old’s body was found in woodland in Kirkcaldy six weeks ago and his mother Rosdeep (33) has been charged with his murder.
A death certificate released this week listed the cause of death as “peritonitis and intra-abdominal haemmorrhage”.
It added that an investigation into the little boy’s death was pending.
Peritonitis is inflammation of the peritoneum the thin lining of the abdomen.
It is most commonly caused by an infection or injury to another part of the body but can also develop directly.
If it spreads, it can be fatal.
An intra-abdominal haemmorrhage is a bleed inside the abdomen.
Mikaeel’s death was registered by his step-grandfather, Dr Bangarpet Krishnaswamy.
It confirmed the tot was found dead at 4am on January 18 in woodland behind Dunvegan Avenue, Kirkcaldy.
He had been reported missing from his Edinburgh home by his mother the previous day.
A huge search for the youngster, involving hundreds of members of the public, followed but their efforts ended in tragedy when his body was found in Kirkcaldy.
Rosdeep was later charged with his murder and attempting to defeat the ends of justice.
