Police are keeping an “open mind” as to the motives of a “petrol bomb” attack outside a shop in Fife last night.

Police in Levenmouth are looking for witnesses to a dangerous incident which took place outside the Shop and Save Store on Main Street, Methilhill.

About 8.25pm a customer was leaving the shop when a bottle containing flammable liquid was thrown towards a green Mercedes van parked and unattended by the shop.

While no damage was caused, the incident clearly could have been more serious.

It is understood the bottle contained a rag which was lit when thrown but it went out before it had a chance to ignite.

Police told The Courier they were keeping an open mind as to whether the attack was wanton vandalism or targeted at an individual.

Detective Sergeant Sam Davidson, who is leading the enquiry, said: “The actions of those responsible were reckless and could have caused significant injury to people who were in the area. Thankfully there was no damage caused, but we want to find those responsible as soon as possible.

“I am appealing to everyone who was in the area at the time and saw anyone who was acting suspiciously at the time, or who has any information that might help us trace those responsible, to call Police Scotland on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”For more on this story, see Wednesday’s Courier or try our digital edition.
