Methil man caught growing 120 cannabis plants in bedroom

A Methil man has admitted growing 120 cannabis plants in a built-in cupboard of his bedroom.

Paul Moffat, 27, of Whyterose Terrace, rigged up a makeshift lab where he attempted to grow plants under the heat of a lamp hanging from a clothes rail.

Depute fiscal Louise Ward told Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court on Thursday that police had been passed information that the accused was growing cannabis at home.

Officers forced their way into his house and found 120 cannabis plants at various stages of development in the cupboard. A second bedroom stored equipment used for the growing of cannabis.

Ms Ward added that most of the plants were not fully grown, with one relatively mature mother plant, three others at an immature stage and 116 small cuttings, at a combined value of £1,430.

Moffat’s solicitor said his client had made an “extremely basic” attempt at growing cannabis after a friend suggested it would be a good idea to grow his own and he went along with it.

Moffat admitted that, between March 1 2013 and April 11 2013, he produced cannabis at his home address. Sheriff Max Hendry deferred sentence for reports.
