A fraudster has been cold-calling Angus residents under the guise of a Citizens Advice Bureau representative.
The shocking case is the latest in a series of scam-type incidents which recently led to one local being tricked out of £59,000 in a telephone deception.
Mairi Buchanan, of Broadening Citizens Advice Services Tayside (BroadCAST), said the cold-caller rang a resident offering help to claim compensation from a car accident, saying they were from CAB.
“I want to say categorically that the CAB never makes unsolicited phone calls to people we haven’t had previous dealings with, and that whoever is making these calls is not doing so on our behalf.
“The CAB would never ‘cold-call’ people like this,” added Ms Buchanan.
“For 70 years we have worked to a very strict code of ethics. Our advice is always free, confidential and completely impartial,” she added.
“Thankfully, the member of the public who reported this call had a withheld number and no other details about their address or other personal information was given out.”
She added: “If in doubt, people should contact us at the CAB at Arbroath on (01241) 870661, our Montrose Office on (01674) 673263 or in Forfar on (01307) 467096.
“Please remember that we would never cold-call members of the public.
“Let’s make sure that this con-artist gets the cold shoulder from Angus. Be on your guard, and spread the word to all your friends and neighbours to make sure they do the same.”
