Plans have been unveiled for yet another city centre hotel to take advantage of the expected rise in visitor numbers to Dundee.
The 34-bedroom budget hotel would be created in a B-listed terraced property at 9 West Bell Street, opposite Abertay University’s library.
Applicant Chris Rigby expects it to be similar in style and price range to a Travel Lodge or Holiday Express.
“The rooms will be basic but will provide the functional amenities of a reasonably priced hotel room,” a design statement submitted to the city council says.
No external alterations will be needed, with only minor works inside.
“All original features within the building, such as cornicing, ceiling roses and panelling, are to be kept as far as possible.
“Repair work will restore or conserve original features and the fine detailing contained within the facade, helping to revitalise the building.”
No hot food will be prepared in the kitchen as the only meal available for guests will be a continental breakfast. Guests will be able to park free on-street overnight or use the Bell Street car park during the day.
In the design statement, architects AB Roger & Young say: “With so much development happening in the city, visitor numbers will increase substantially and further hotel accommodation will be required.”
Council planners recently approved turning part of Lower Dens Works, just east of the city centre, into a 130-bedroom budget hotel. Work is expected to get under way in the next few months.
Consent in principle has also been given for a 100-bedroom hotel on the site of the Shell filling station next to the Olympia.
