Human remains have been found in North East Fife.
The grim discovery was made only a few miles from the home of Newport woman Susan Reid, who has been missing since January.
Although Police Scotland declined to confirm to The Courier the exact location of the find, it coincides with reports of a large police presence in the St Michaels area on Tuesday evening.
A brief statement issued by the force said: “Police Scotland can confirm that human remains have been found in a rural location in north-east Fife on Tuesday.
“A forensic examination is taking place. Enquiries are at a very early stage.”
The find comes as police continue to search for Susan Reid.
The 56-year-old Dundee University librarian has not been in contact with her family since January and a widespread search of the Tay Bridgehead area has been conducted.
Police refused to confirm whether the discovery is connected to the search for Mrs Reid.
