Memories of Frank Kopel’s years as a five-a-side player were celebrated at a fundraising Angus reunion.
A group of friends who played with Frank every Friday at Webster’s Sport Centre, Kirriemuir, came together to toast the former Dundee United star’s 65th birthday.
The five-a-side football reunion night at Kirriemuir Golf Club also gave everyone a chance to raise money for the Frank Kopel Alzheimer’s Awareness Campaign.
Frank and his son Scott were among the players who played regularly on a Friday night for more than 15 years in the 8-9pm slot and shared many laughs along the way.
Organiser Tony Smith said: “Many fathers encouraged their sons to come along as a rite of passage. One who stands out is Frank Kopel.
“Frank was a true sportsman, a gentleman with a wry sense of humour, especially when giving his views on self-regulating refereeing decisions on court!”
Frank lifted the League Cup twice during his 10 years at Tannadice and was diagnosed with the disease in 2009.
His wife Amanda has been forced to pay the council hundreds of pounds for a carer and she has fought a bitter battle to get the higher rate of Disability Living Allowance.
Frank is still cared for at home in Kirriemuir but his condition is quickly deteriorating.
