Donald Fraser, the former owner of Tayford Motor Company, Dundee, died at Roxburghe House on Saturday. He was 89.

For the native of Auldearn, Nairnshire, Tayford was the start of a second successful career, following many years working overseas that were abruptly halted in 1970 with nationalisation, leading to the end of British business interests in the Sudan.

As a young motor engineer, the lure of foreign climes had drawn Mr Fraser to Khartoum 22 years previously, where he joined the Sudan Mercantile Company, his employer throughout his time there.

His contribution was recognised in 1972 by the awarding of an MBE for services to British industry overseas.

His return to the UK marked the start of his lasting and fond connection with Dundee and the surrounding area, not only through the founding of Tayford out of the former George Maclean & Co but also through his participation in several institutions such as Blairgowrie and Panmure golf clubs, the Western Club and the Nine Incorporated Trades Donald was a hammerman.

Initially living in Invergowrie, Mr Fraser and his family moved to their present home in Glamis Road, Dundee, in 1977. He is survived by his wife Irene, children Simon and Jennifer and six grandchildren.
