Police were called to Abertay University’s library after a row broke out over noise in its silent study zone.
They are investigating claims that a male student was verbally abused.
It is alleged that he became involved in an argument with a woman who had told him to keep the noise down as he left.
A university spokesman said: “We can confirm there was an incident an argument in the library over an issue of noise in the quiet study area.
“We are aware the police were called later to have a look at CCTV footage.”
A Police Scotland spokeswoman confirmed that officers had attended at the library, close to police headquarters in West Bell Street, following reports of a disturbance on Tuesday evening.
“Inquiries are ongoing,” she added.
