Royal Bank of Scotland has admitted the branch on Dundee’s Perth Road which it will close in the summer is still well used.
West End councillor Fraser Macpherson has been trying to persuade management to change their minds, but had been told previously that customer numbers at the bank’s branches were down 30% since 2010.
He went back to them to ask for specific figures for Perth Road.
Les Matheson, chief executive of personal and business banking, replied: “It is certainly the case that the Perth Road branch has not experienced the reduction in customer numbers we have seen elsewhere in our branch network.
“Your constituents are right to observe that the branch continues to be used regularly.
“However, while footfall is, of course, an important consideration, our decision to close the branch also took account of a number of other factors.”
Mr Macpherson said RBS had been unfair in originally trying to justify the closure with an argument that did not stand up to scrutiny.
“I have therefore now written to RBS to request that the bank rescinds the decision to close the branch, recognising that continuing high customer usage at it justifies it continuing to serve the west end community,” he said.
