A92 upgrade will save lives and boost Fife economy says council

Fife Council is working on an economic case to persuade Transport Scotland to upgrade the road.

Upgrading a notorious Fife road could save lives and boost the regional economy, it has been claimed.

A Fife Council official has said that improvements to the A92 could form an integral part of a revolution of Fife’s transport network, that could also see a rail link return to the Levenmouth area for the first time in a generation.

Council officials are already working on an economic case in an effort to persuade Transport Scotland to significantly overhaul the trunk road.

However, any proposed improvements to the road could also see knock-on benefits for the rest of the region, particularly for areas near Fife Energy Park.

Campaigners have long fought for upgrades to the A92 following a spate of fatal accidents.

With Transport Scotland seemingly unconvinced by their case, establishing economic grounds for investment now appears to be the only way to improve the road’s safety record.

Following a meeting with politicians and campaigners, Bob McLellan, head of transport and environmental services at Fife Council, said investment “will help improve road access and road safety in Fife.”

He added: “As well as this, we’re also going to ask Transport Scotland to look at making improvements to the road links to central Fife, in particular to the Fife Renewables Innovation Centre (FRIC) in Methil and a business case to reinstate the Levenmouth rail link.”
