Bomb disposal experts were called to a house in Perth on Tuesday afternoon.
A resident on Newhouse Road discovered an old flare while cleaning out his garden shed. An Explosives Ordinance Disposal (EOD) team attended from Edinburgh to make sure it was safe.
The flare, which is believed to date from the 1940s, was found not to contain any explosives and was taken away to be destroyed.
A spokeswoman for Police Scotland confirmed that they had also attended the incident.
She said: “We were called at 3.55pm to reports of a mortar type device in a garden shed.
“The device was a Papa flare used in training exercises. There was no explosives in the device.
“EOD attended as a precaution and they have taken it away for destruction. No evacuation or cordon was required.
“It has been in the shed for about 12 years. The resident had lived there 12 years and this is the first time he’s cleared the shed,” the spokeswoman added.
