More than a dozen caravans have formed an unauthorised Travellers’ site on the Angus coast. The camp, which includes work vans and cars, has set up on the grass outside Arbroath FC’s Gayfield ground. Attempts have already been made by the authorities to move the illegal camp on. Resident Arlene Russell, 68, said: “I love Arbroath, but I don’t like this. It puts people off when they come. “They turned up Wednesday or Thursday. I spoke to the police and they said they were hoping to get a court order to have them removed. “People have stopped coming along here to walk their dogs because of it. They used to walk their dogs across the grass, and they are just not coming.” In previous years, residents and councillors have voiced concern at groups of Travellers setting up home in the Gayfield area. Arbroath West councillor David Fairweather said: “It is an inconvenience, but it will not go away and is going to happen time after time. “There is not really much the council can do.”
