Sheriff blasts man who missed meeting to go on holiday

An Angus sheriff has blasted a man who did not turn up for a vital appointment because he went on holiday.

Maksims Jermosins, 29, whose bail address was given as Balgarthno Road, Dundee, previously had sentence deferred for the preparation of background reports but he failed to appear.

Arbroath Sheriff Court heard that Jermosins originally from Latvia instead flew back to his homeland for a short break.

Sheriff Murray told him: “Your idiotic decision not to tell the court you were going away to Latvia has cost a lot of money. I will bear that in mind when I come to sentence you.

“You were told by me it was your only chance. Don’t pretend you didn’t hear that.”

Jermosins previously admitted assaulting his wife at an address in Arbroath on March 9. He repeatedly lunged at her after accusing her of being unfaithful.

He also threatened to kill his wife during an abusive tirade over three days.

There was a disagreement before Jermosins became aggressive and warned that if she phoned the police he would suffocate her.

Jermosins then called her a bitch and threatened to kill her.

He told her: “What am I waiting for? I will suffocate you now.”

The following day he arrived home and began looking at her computer and accused her of being unfaithful.

She said she had done nothing wrong but he demanded to see her emails.

Defence agent Nick Markowski said: “This incident was alcohol-related. He has not had a drink since he was released from custody.”

Sheriff Murray gave Jermosins a final chance to comply with the social work department for the preparation of a report.

He deferred sentence further until June 12 and again granted him bail on the condition that he stays out of Arbroath.
