Andy Geggan back on his feet to fire Dunfermline into play-off final

Andy Geggan went from being hospital patient to play-off hero as Dunfermline clinched a place in the all-Fife showdown.

The Pars will travel the few miles to Central Park on Wednesday to face Cowdenbeath then come home on Sunday to decide who takes the coveted place in next season’s Championship.

With Rangers and Hearts already there and the possibility of Hibs joining them, getting back up would mean everything to the East End Park side.

How badly Geggan wants it was shown by his man-of-the-match performance against Stranraer in the semi-final just days after a medical scare.

Geggan suffered kidney damage during the first leg at Stair Park, which was won 2-1 by the Blues.

He had to go to get it checked out by doctors that night and it placed a huge question mark over his fitness for the return in Fife on Saturday.

Not only did he start the game, Geggan ran the match for long spells.

He also scored the goal that took the contest into extra-time before adding a second with a header and then watching colleague Faissal El Bakhtaoui make it 3-0 on the day and 4-2 on aggregate.

Speaking of his health scare, Geggan said: “I don’t know who it was I am still in the hunt to find out but someone hit me in the kidney during Wednesday night’s game.

“I got some kidney damage and my chest was tightening up as well. I was getting shooting pains and felt I just couldn’t go on like that. So I had to get rushed to hospital to see how I was.

“I had the pads on to check out my heart and stuff like that but, as you saw in this game, I was all right. I did feel a little bit of pain on my side but I wasn’t caring.

“Now we have two games left against Cowdenbeath and we want to get up there now.

“We will be ready for it. It will be fantastic if we can get to the Championship. That’s where we want to be and it will be an unbelievable league next year.”

The venues for the final legs have been switched around as Cowden couldn’t host a home game on Sunday because of the stock-car racing at Central Park that day.

There was talk of moving to a neutral venue but instead the Blue Brazil will play at home first and then go along the road to East End on Sunday.
