North-east based Stewart Milne Timber Systems yesterday secured a £1 million supply contract for the UK’s first new-build eco-town.
The company said it was working with lead developer A2Dominion and main housing contractor Willmott Dixon to provide highly-sustainable timber frame houses for the cutting-edge North West Bicester development.
Each home in the development will have a zero carbon rating with heat and hot water generated on-site from a gas-fired power plant and further power needs coming from the UK’s largest domestic solar panel array.
The timber frames will be constructed off-site and it is expected they will be wind and water tight within 72 hours of arrival at their destination.
Group managing director Alex Goodfellow said the project was a showcase for how far energy efficient design had come.
“It’s fantastic to be involved with such a forward-thinking model of modern living which fits so well with the government’s vision of a sustainable future.
“The timing of the programme is extremely ambitious. Being able to build the timber systems before they’re brought to the site to be erected with mobile cranes allows a significant time advantage over standard construction methods.”
