When it comes to who has the biggest fan club at Celtic Park on Saturday, Steven MacLean will take some beating.
Saints’ supporter-base in the run-up to the Scottish Cup final has reached as far as Peebles, where a borders evacuation to Glasgow is planned.
“I’ve had to get 70 tickets and I think there’s almost just as big a buzz in Peebles as there is in Perth about this game,” the Saints striker revealed.
“I’ve got loads of family and friends going to the game on a bus.
“People have been calling it the Venga Bus and we’ve been getting phone calls from people wanting to come on it.
“The final is massive, it’s not until you’re actually in it you realise how much it means to people.”
McDiarmid Park has been part football ground, part ticket office and part merchandise shop as cup fever has grown like never before in the Fair City.
The players wouldn’t have been able to detach themselves if they had tried, but MacLean insisted that they haven’t lost their focus.
“To have sold over 14,000 tickets is amazing. I’d never have thought that would happen.
“But it just shows how much St Johnstone means to the community in Perth and how many people are backing us to win the cup.
“The whole place has been buzzing and around the club it has been mental with people coming in to buy tickets, T-shirts and other souvenirs.
“As players we haven’t been distracted by that. Everyone has enjoyed the build-up so far but we’re focused on the job.
“We’re taking a big support to Celtic Park with us and what we want is for them to be celebrating at the end.”
