Banned driver claims anti-German hostility in Comrie

An eccentric Comrie resident is considering leaving the village after an appearance at Perth Sheriff Court.
Victor Von Werra, 61, of Drummond Street, was previously found guilty of driving while unfit through drugs and has now been banned from the road for nine months and fined £400.
He had taken a cocktail of prescribed drugs before getting behind the wheel and the police were called after he was spotted drifting around the A85 Crieff to Comrie road on December 5 2012.
Witnesses reported that he had only narrowly avoided collisions with vehicles travelling in the opposite direction.
Despite a negative breath test, police officers were so concerned by his demeanour that they arrested him and he was assessed as unfit to drive following a blood test.
During his trial, Von Werra said that the allegations and witness statements were exaggerated because he was “not popular in Comrie”, in part due to his “German name” and celebration of his German history.
The court heard that both were largely invented.
Von Werra said he is now considering putting the village of Comrie behind him.
