Whisper it but if Dundee United lift the Scottish Cup on Saturday they will move ahead of city rivals Dundee in the number of major honours won.
This particular parochial contest is currently tied at 5-5.
The Dark Blues were first off the mark back in 1910 when they collected the Scottish Cup by beating Clyde 2-1 at Ibrox in a second replay. Jimmy Bellamy and John “Sailor” Hunter got the goals.
Fast forward to 1951 and a Dens side including greats Billy Steel, Alfie Boyd and Doug Cowie saw off Rangers 3-2 in the League Cup final at Hampden.
They were back at the national stadium the following year to lift the same trophy, with a double from Bobby Flavell enough to defeat Kilmarnock 2-0.
Dundee’s finest achievement would come on April 28, 1962 when they were crowned champions of Scotland.
The venue was Muirton Park and the opposition was St Johnstone.
The Dark Blues eased to victory thanks to a double from Alan Gilzean and another from Andy Penman to make it 3-0.
Over a decade would go by before Dundee won their third League Cup and fifth trophy in total.
They faced a formidable Celtic side at Hampden on December 15, 1973 but triumphed thanks to a winner from Gordon Wallace.
That made it 5-0 to Dundee in the city silverware battle but United started their comeback in 1979, finally collecting their first major honour.
It was the League Cup and their 3-0 victory over Aberdeen in a replay on December 12–it had finished goalless in the first game at Hampden–was all the sweeter in that it came at Dens, the home of their neighbours.
A double from Willie Pettigrew and a single from Paul Sturrock left the Dons demoralised.
A year later, United were back at Dens in the same tournament and this time they were playing the Dark Blues, who had earned the right to host the all-Dundee final after a toss of the coin.
Once again the Tangerines triumphed 3-0, this time their goals coming from Davie Dodds and a Sturrock double.
United’s greatest achievement came at Dens once again, with legends like Hamish McAlpine, Paul Hegarty, Dave Narey, Eamonn Bannon, Ralph Milne and Sturrock becoming champions.
The date was May 14, 1983 and the Tannadice men won 2-1–the goals coming from Milne and Bannon–against Dundee to clinch the Premier League crown.
Despite numerous final appearances, the Scottish Cup eluded them until 1994 when, under the management of Ivan Golac, a Craig Brewster tap-in saw them beat the odds against double treble-chasing Rangers at Hampden.
United drew level on trophies in 2010 when a wonder goal from David Goodwillie and a Craig Conway double sealed victory over Ross County in the Scottish Cup final.
Fans of the Tangerines will argue that their two Scottish Cups–as the senior competition–already gives them the edge, while supporters of the Dark Blues will remind them they did it all first.
Victory over Saints, though, and it will undeniably be advantage United in the city trophy count.
