Burst water main cuts supplies and floods Old Course in St Andrews

A burst water main in central St Andrews on Tuesday evening flooded part of the world famous Old Course and cut supplies to properties.

Scottish Water confirmed that a burst main was reported at Gibson Place around 4pm. Water flowing from the burst ran on to the 18th fairway of the golf course and accumulated in a dip behind theSwilcan Bridge.

The Old Course was already waterlogged having been affected by a heavy thundery downpour late in the afternoon which left many areas saturated and Scottish Water said this may have contributed to flooding in the area.

Customers in the Gibson Place/Market Street/North Street/South Street area were initially affected by the burst and warned they may experience loss of water supply, low pressure, and discoloured water. The problem was later isolated to the immediate Gibson Place area.

A squad of around five workmen with a digger was on site shortly after “to carry out the necessary repairs and restore supplies as soon as possible”.

Scottish Water told The Courier that a “small number of properties” had been affected. Supplies were restored by 8.30pm.

Updating at 9.50pm, a Scottish Water spokesman said the burst was reported at 4pm: “This occurred on the lowest point of our network, resulting in temporary loss of supply to some customers in the area. We managed to isolate this quickly, leaving a small number of remaining customers with disrupted supply until around 8.30.

“We are grateful to customers for their patience and apologise for inconvenience while we worked to fix this burst main.”

The Courier contacted several local businesses in the area who said they had been unaffected, including The Rusacks Hotel and the New Golf Club.

Residents took to Facebook and Twitter to voice their concerns. Georgie Maclachlan said the flow of her tap had become a “pathetic dribble” while Ali Hill said the university library had also been affected.
