John Gibson after fresh set of challenges after Dens Park exit

Goalkeeper John Gibson has admitted it was difficult leaving Dundee but now he is determined to be a success elsewhere.

The 24-year-old, who had spent five years at Dens, was told at the start of this week by boss Paul Hartley that his contract would not be renewed.

Gibson had failed to make an impact with the first team, with Kyle Letheren and Dan Twardzik ahead of him in the pecking order. Now, he is on the hunt for another club to kick-start his career.

He said: “I’m gutted because I had some great times at Dundee and met some really nice people but I knew within myself that my time was up and I respect the manager’s decision.

“Now I have to take the positives out of it and see this as a fresh start. I’m at an age where I need to establish myself as a No 1 at a new club.

“It’s about getting a different challenge and that’s something I’m really excited.”

Gibson was deemed surplus to requirements on Monday, along with striker Christian Nade.

Championship-winning skipper Gavin Rae then also revealed that he would not be renewing his contract as he was moving to Australia with his family and now Leighton McIntosh has been released.

Great things had been expected of the 21-year-old front man but he has been dogged by injury in the last two seasons.

McIntosh, who was capped at under-19 level, will forever be remembered by Dundee fans as being the man who scored the goal up in Dingwall against Ross County in 2011 that kept the club in the old First Division after the Dark Blues had been hit with a 25-point penalty for entering administration for the second time.
