Morgaro Gomis will become a member of an exclusive club if he picks up a winner’s medal at Parkhead.
The Dundee United midfielder will be accompanied by team-mates Sean Dillon and Keith Watson as the only men to have been double Scottish Cup winners with the club.
The opposition was Ross County, the venue was Hampden, the date was May 15 and the result was 3-0 to the Tangerines thanks to an amazing goal from David Goodwillie and a Craig Conway double, with Gomis laying on the winger’s second strike.
When you consider the legends who have walked the Tannadice corridors over the years but never won the tournament, people like Dave Narey, Paul Hegarty and Paul Sturrock, it would be a tremendous achievement to pick up silver twice.
Gomis realises he is one victory away from a special achievement, saying: “It would be great to get a second winner’s medal. I know I am one of only a few, along with Sean and Keith.
“It would be great to have on your CV and I still have the DVD of the 2010 game and sometimes I end up watching it to put a smile on my face.
“My medal is safe at home. I remember everything about 2010. When Goodie scored the first goal everyone went crazy. All the boys were jumping about.
“When Craig scored the second you kind of knew you were going to win the cup. It was a great day for everyone connected with the club.
“We went back to Dundee and ended up going out partying with the fans. “didn’t sleep that night. I stayed up all night.
“I had my family over from Paris and we partied right through the night. I wasn’t drunk so I remember almost everything that happened.”
As well as sheer delight, Gomis also experienced absolute despair with United when they lost a penalty shoot-out to Rangers in the 2008 CIS Cup final.
United were leading 1-0 heading into the final seconds of regulation time when a short Mark Kerr passback let in Kris Boyd to level.
The Tangerines regained the lead in extra-time thanks to a fine Mark de Vries strike but another Boyd goal took it to penalties, which the Light Blues edged 3-2.
Gomis recalled: “That was my first experience of a final one I would rather forget. I still think about the cruel way we lost that game.
“I was speaking to a few of the boys about it this week and I told them what happened. It was crazy.
“Mark Kerr tried to play the ball to the goalkeeper in the last seconds and Boyd was there to score the goal.
“When we got to extra-time we scored and thought we were going to win it again but they equalised Boyd again and we lost on penalties.
“It was an emotional day as the chairman at the time, Eddie Thompson, was ill and we really wanted to win the game for him. We thought we had done it but that’s football you never know what can happen.”
United were underdogs in the final against Rangers but favourites against Ross County. They are the bookies’ choice to win it this time but not by much.
Gomis said: “I don’t think it makes any difference if we are favourites or not. It is a cup final and you just want to go out there and play your game and try your best to win.
“I don’t do anything special on the day of the game. I just relax and you can’t wait for kick off to see if you’re playing and if you’re on the bench then you need to be prepared to get on.
“We know they are a good team and have some really good players but we are all ready for it. It’s going to be a hard game but I feel the boys are ready for it I can see it in their faces.”
