Soon-to-be Dundee striker Greg Stewart has confessed all his end-of-season dreams have come true after he was able to leave Cowdenbeath with the lucrative leaving present of Championship survival.
Last month Stewart, 24, signed a pre-contract to join the Dark Blues next season but has proved he was never tempted to rest on his laurels in seeing out his fourth season with Cowdenbeath.
The one-time Hearts youth striker took this term’s tally to 16 with three goals in the two legs of the play-off semi-final triumph over Ayr United before sealing a priceless victory over Dunfermline with his side’s third in Sunday’s 3-0 success at East End Park.
The 4-1 aggregate win over the Pars ensured the Blue Brazil staved off the threat of relegation to League One and allows them to relish the prospect of a money-spinning Championship including Rangers and Hearts next term.
If Stewart is thrilled he is leaving behind the Fifers on a high, he admits Dundee’s promotion to the Premiership means the campaign climax could hardly have gone any better for him.
He said: “The team came through, at the end of the day.
“We went to East End Park and did what we had to do and I’m absolutely delighted for the fans, the players, the chairman, the manager, everybody connected with Cowdenbeath.”
“I thought there was only one team that was going to win. The boys just kept on pushing and the second and third goals just killed the game off.
“The pressure was off us by the end, so we could afford to enjoy it.
“But when the game was tight, the two teams were obviously nervous because there was a lot to lose, with the teams that are going to be in the league next season.
“I don’t know what would have happened if the club had gone down, I don’t know what the chairman was thinking, but winning means they’ll be in a good position, with the money they’ll bring in next season.
“On Saturday night before the game I was lying in bed going over all the scenarios and it couldn’t have worked out any better for me.
“To get a goal in my last game as well, I’m absolutely delighted. The ideal scenario was obviously Dundee to win the league and Cowdenbeath to stay in the division, no matter what it took.”
