‘Quite horrific’ education chief hears claims of Dundee parents buying legal highs for children

Parents are buying legal highs for their own underage children with “horrific” results, Dundee’s education convener has been told.

Councillor Stewart Hunter said he has heard horror stories about the growing problem of legal highs in the city particularly among teenagers under 18.

He said there is a growing realisation that younger children must be educated in schools about legal highs.

He has also proposed a council clampdown on retailers selling the dangerous highs which are often designed to mimic the effects of illegal drugs.

Mr Hunter said: “I’ve had a number of constituents who have come to me regarding family members who have taken legal highs.

“What they’ve described to me is quite horrific, about how it’s transformed their relatives. It is quite scary.

“From what I’ve heard as well, there seem to be issues with people being able to get hold of these despite the fact that they’re underage.

“It’s quite clear there are some shops that have no problems about who they’re selling them to.

“Constituents are telling me that there are actually parents picking up legal highs for their underage children.”

He said although children are being educated about the dangers of drugs perhaps it needs to be done from an earlier age.
