Lorry attack vandals could have caused ‘carnage’

Vandals who threw objects at two lorries on the A90 at Tealing could have caused “utter carnage” and killed both drivers.

Councillor Craig Fotheringham said he was shocked by news of the incident which took place in the early hours of Tuesday morning. He branded the culprits “disgraceful”.

He said: “They could have killed the drivers. If the lorries had swerved across the dual carriageway, it could have been utter carnage.”

“The destruction they could have caused doesn’t bear thinkingabout.”

Police Scotland are carrying out inquiries after the two large delivery lorries, one from Tesco and the other believed to be a Sainsbury’s vehicle, had their windscreens cracked.

Both incidents happened on the southbound carriageway of the A90 Aberdeen to Dundee road at Tealing.

The first took place at 1.50am and the second just after 2am.

Fortunately, no one was injured but a combined £600-worth of damage was caused, with both windscreens having to be replaced.

Mr Fotheringham said the incident was “totally unacceptable” and he urged members of the public to come forward with information to prevent the culprits from doing something so dangerous again.

He said: “We had a fatal accident on that road just last year. This incident could have beenfatal.”

A Tesco spokesman said: “The safety of all our colleagues at Tesco is naturally one of our top priorities and we are disgusted that our driver should be the target of such a violent and reckless act.

“Thankfully, our driver came away from the incident unscathed and immediately called the police.”

Officers in Angus say the actions were “irresponsible, reckless and extremely dangerous,” with the “potential for a serious or even fatal road traffic incident to occur.”

A spokesman for Tayside Police said: “Clearly, the throwing of any objects at a moving vehicle is irresponsible, reckless and extremely dangerous.

“But for good fortune alone, these incidents passed without injury. But the potential for a serious or even fatal road traffic incident to occur is all too apparent.

“Police Scotland wants to trace those responsible and would appeal to the public for their assistance.

“Anyone who was in the area or who has information as to who was involved in this reckless conduct should contact 101, or speak to any officer.”
