Dundee’s depute convener of education has been accused of bringing his position into disrepute by clinging to office after making offensive comments about women in boardrooms.
SNP councillor Gregor Murray created a stir by describing in expletives his own Government’s plans for 40% of boardrooms in public and private sector bodies in Scotland to be female.
After his comments on social media he was called on to consider his position on the education committee by Labour education spokesman Laurie Bidwell.
However, Mr Murray said he would not be quitting and his defiance upset Mr Bidwell, who said: “I think he has brought his role into disrepute.” The Labour member continued: “I would have hoped that because of his role he would have gone.
“We in the council have to set an example in what we say and do and have to be very careful in the use of social media.
“The abuse of social media is a big issue in schools through things like cyber bullying. It is important that elected members show leadership in the way they use social media and conduct themselves in public.
“I think Councillor Murray has fallen short of the standards that are expected of people who hold public office.”
