A group of Glenrothes sports clubs believe they are on to a winner having joined forces to create a purpose-built sports hub in the town.
Glenrothes Cricket Club, Glenrothes Athletic Football Club and Glenrothes Tennis Club have pooled their resources in an effort to establish a £1 million sports pavilion at Gilvenbank Park.
The football and tennis clubs are already looking for new homes, while the cricket club is keen to expand its footprint after recent successes on the field and in the community.
Kenny Crichton, operations manager at Glenrothes Cricket Club and chairman of the Gilvenbank Sports Hub, said: “It will be based at Gilvenbank Park and the plan is to have a £1m pavilion built. That is where we are right now. There is nothing like that in the north of the town at the moment.
“The crazy thing for the tennis club is that it has over 100 members but it has no courts so this is a huge thing for them.”
The pavilion is proposed to house seven changing rooms, office space and referee changing rooms.
The cricket field is already in place, while the football club, which plays at Carleton Park, will also establish its home at Gilvenbank.
Three new tennis courts will also be built to provide a permanent base for the sport in the town.
Glenrothes Cricket Club only moved to Gilvenbank Park from Riverside Park last year and is set to open its own indoor training facilities this month. The tie-up with the tennis and football clubs could make the process of fundraising significantly easier, with bodies like sportscotland to be targeted.
If successful, Mr Crichton believes the new pavilion could open as early as next winter.
“We’re hoping it could be open in about a year and a half,” he said.
“Just now we are going through legal stuff, making a constitution so that we can apply for funding. There are three of us though so we’re hoping to be successful.”
