Fife centenarian Eileen McKechnie

Fife centenarian Eileen McKechnie

Eileen McKechnie, who celebrated her 100th birthday last year at Rosturk Home in Cupar, has died. She was 101.

Born in Inverness, Mrs McKechnie attended Inverness Royal Academy before leaving for London at the age of 17 to learn shorthand and typing.

On her return to her home town, she went to work in the treasurer’s office at the Town House, where in 1936 she met her husband Peter McKechnie, who had moved from Glasgow to take the post of burgh assessor.

They married in September 1939, but because her husband was in his mid-thirties and his eyesight was not good enough, Mrs McKechnie was spared the anxiety of him serving in the conflict.

Both her brothers were drafted and ended up as PoWs.

After the war, Mr McKechnie got a job as assessor of Argyll and the Isles, and the family moved to Campbeltown. His work later took him to West Lothian and the family moved to Bathgate in 1951.

In 1956, the family moved to Fife and settled in Dairsie.

After Peter passed away in 1986, Mrs McKechnie stayed positive and kept busy with hobbies including dressmaking, embroidery and playing the piano.

Over the years she was a dedicated gardener and drove herself everywhere until she was 90.

She is survived by her children Judith and Roger, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
