The Courier’s Referendum Roadshow visited two of the most scenic parts of Perthshire on Wednesday.
But even in tranquil Blair Atholl and Kinloch Rannoch the referendum was raising passions.
Pamela Shanto was “worried about finances, arms, just about every aspect of independence”.
“There are not enough young people to pay pensions and benefits,” she said.
With our ageing population and oil running out, she feared an independent Scotland could end up in dire financial straits.
While it must be noted the majority of respondents to our survey echoed that view, there were other voices who had a more positive view of independence and highlighted what they described as media bias.
Elspeth Morrison was worried about the reporting of the referendum, claiming the BBC were particularly biased against the Yes case.
She said there was a “steady stream of misinformation”.
Andrew Edgar, who is originally from Blair Atholl but now resident in France, felt it was unfair that expats did not have the chance to vote on this huge issue.
Both areas gave a resounding No vote in our high-tech ping-pong ball poll, with Blair Atholl Yes 24% and No 76%, and Kinloch Rannoch Yes 36% and No 67%.
However, as we drove down along past the River Tummel with the Fairy Hill of the Caledonians (Schiehallion) towering majestically above us, reflecting in lochans, I couldn’t help but feel that this mysterious area may not yet have shown her hand.
