NHS Tayside chiefs are to meet GPs in Montrose regarding the situation at the town’s infirmary.
The hospital has been closed since late April after the failure of heating and water systems but the maternity unit will reopen from June 16.
However, elderly patients who were transferred to Brechin will not be moved back to the Montrose GP ward immediately for what have been described as sound clinical reasons.
NHS Tayside’s medical director Dr Andrew Russell said: “There are three patients from Montrose being cared for at Brechin Infirmary and, as I have already stated, clinical evidence gives us many reasons why it would not be in those patients’ best interests to transfer them to Montrose.
“Currently, there are no patients waiting to be admitted to Brechin Infirmary. However, we are keeping a close watching brief on the situation and will keep the community updated.
“We have been in touch with the local GP practices and are arranging a meeting with them to discuss the ongoing situation.
“Our number one priority will always be the patients and providing the best care experience that we can.”
Antenatal and postnatal maternity services continue to be provided at clinics at the Links Health Centre in Montrose by the local midwifery team.
Mothers-to-be continue to be advised of the transfer of maternity services for the birth of their babies to Arbroath Community Maternity Unit at Arbroath Infirmary.
Since the transfer of services there have been 23 babies, whose mothers would have given birth at Montrose, born in Arbroath.
Dr Margaret McGuire, NHS Tayside’s nurse director, said: “Our plans remain to open the community maternity unit at Montrose in the week commencing June 16.
“Midwives are already gearing up for this reopening and, in the meantime, continue to provide care to Montrose women both at the Links Health Centre and at Arbroath Community Maternity Unit. The team is ensuring that they are keeping local mums updated with progress and this will continue until we have a confirmed date for the reopening of the unit.”
The GP ward has transferred to the inpatient unit at Brechin Infirmary and patients will be admitted directly into Brechin.
