The City of Perth Gold Cup day has been hailed for providing a “great financial” boost for Perth Racecourse and the city itself.

It is estimated that between 6,000-8,000 racing fans turned out in the Sunday sunshine for the event, which is regarded as one of the most important in course’s calendar.

With jockey superstar Tony McCoy present and total prize money of more than £60,000, the crowds many resplendent in their ‘Sunday best’ turned out in their thousands and provided an economic boost for Perth.

Sam Morshead, general manager of Perth Racecourse, told The Courier the event had been a “fantastic day”.Click here for a full photo gallery“The Perth Gold Cup day has a great financial impact it’s great for the racecourse and the city,” he said.

“The sun is shining, we have Tony McCoy taking part, great racing and we have big crowds here.”

He continued: “We need to make the best of the 16 days racing we have, with our other two big race days on July 3 and August 16. However, any profits we make are ploughed back into the racecourse.”
