Councillors asked to approve another £60,000 for cemetery headstone checks

Inspecting headstones to see if they are in danger of toppling over has cut the risk to cemetery visitors, Dundee City Council has said.
Councillors will be asked tonight to allocate £60,000 to continue the work, which began more than two years ago.
A report says: “All headstones in the Eastern Cemetery have been inspected while Barnhill and Balgay are substantially complete.
“A full record of the condition of the headstones has been recorded in a database and any dangerous stones up to 1.5m were dealt with during the inspection process.
“Dangerous larger stones are being sub-contracted to a specialist contractor to have these made safe,” the report says.
“There are still ongoing problems of dangerous headstones within cemeteries and there is a need from a health and safety perspective to continue the inspection and action programme.”
The checks have proved controversial in the past, with families describing their shock at finding safety warnings attached to stones.
