Four thugs involved in a “maelstrom of violence” in Dundee which left three men unconscious have been jailed for a total of six years.
Dundee Sheriff Court was shown CCTV footage of the city centre fight, which erupted quickly and lasted only 90 seconds.
The court heard how three men were knocked to the ground on South Ward Road, cracking their heads off the cobbled street, where they were left unconscious in the early hours of July 18 2013.
Sheriff Alistair Brown said: “This was an ugly, unpleasant and completely unnecessary attack, outside a licensed premises, which involved as victims a number of people who simply had the misfortune to be there.
“This appeared to be indiscriminate, unprovoked violence.
“Those who indulge in this sort of violence and attack people without any sort of significant provocation will find themselves at very serious risk of imprisonment.
“In this case, I have decided in relation to each of the accused that no sentence other than imprisonment is appropriate.”
Brian Borland, 24, of Pitairlie Road, Dundee, was sentenced to four years in jail.
Sheriff Brown told him had it not been for his mental disorder he would have considered remitting Borland to the High Court, which has higher sentencing powers.
Scott Fraser, 23, of Catterline Crescent, Dundee, who delivered an “opportunist kick” to the head of a man on the ground, was sentenced to eight months.
Bobby Borland, 21, of Waterside Street, West Bromwich, was sentenced to eight months for his part in the fray, which involved punching a man’s head along with others.
His solicitor told the court he had been dragged into “a maelstrom of violence” after attending a family funeral and subsequent 12-hour drinking session.
Terry Montgomery, 21, of Priory Gateway, Birmingham, was sentenced to 16 months for his involvement in two of the assaults as well as behaving in a threatening and abusive manner at the rear of Travel Lodge in West Marketgait.
The court heard at a previous hearing how the incident had begun outside the nightclub with an argument between Brian Borland and a man in an orange shirt.
A man in a blue shirt stepped in to assist and was punched to the ground by Borland at which point a large-scale fight broke out with all accused entering the fray. All four accused then ran away towards Marketgait.
Fraser was traced and arrested near to G Casino, while Brian Borland and Terry Montgomery were involved in a stand-off with police at Travel Lodge until armed officers arrived and they gave themselves up.
Bobby Borland later attended at police headquarters and was also arrested.
