Ron Wilkie, a former chairman of Tele Taxis and Arab aficionado, has passed away at the age of 86.
Mr Wilkie operated as a taxi driver and voluntary worker at Dundee United Football Club for the best part of 50 years.
Born in Dundee in 1928, he began what was to become a lifelong interest in transport, working as a message delivery boy with the Co-op.
In the latter part of the Second World War he was old enough to serve as a police messenger in Dundee. After the war, he stayed on his bike working as a parcel delivery boy with Dundee Corporation.
He subsequently began driving Dundee Corporation buses before gaining his taxi operator’s licence.
At Tele Taxis Mr Wilkie was instrumental in introducing the first computerised dispatch system to the Dundee fleet.
A lifelong Dundee United fan, Mr Wilkie served the club for over 20 years in a voluntary capacity as an administrator of the Young Arabs junior supporters’ club and as a mascot coordinator.
He became a member of the Dundee United Business Club in the early 1990s and was a committee member until 2012.
Mr Wilkie’s grandson, Lee, became a professional footballer, playing for both Dundee clubs as well as representing his country.
Mr Wilkie is survived by wife Isa, sons Ron and Bruce, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
