Angus Council is to roll out the second phase of its kerbside recycling scheme to residents in Forfar, Kirriemuir and the surrounding areas.
The council, like other local authorities, is being driven to make changes to kerbside recycling services to meet Scottish Government targets and new waste legislation.
Communities convener Donald Morrison said: “There are 24,000 households now on the new kerbside recycling service.
“While there were a few teething problems in phase 1, which are being addressed, the response from residents has been overwhelming.
“For example, we have collected approximately 300 tonnes of food waste; the amount of general waste has reduced by almost 40%; and we estimate the new scheme has already diverted an additional 700 tonnes of waste from landfill or incineration.
“If this waste was sent to landfill, it would have cost the taxpayer £56,000 in landfill tax alone.”
