Youths in the Kirkton area are about to meet a boy in blue who used to be a Dark Blue.

Robbie Raeside was a defender with Dundee FC in the 1990s and his football career also included spells with Raith Rovers and Arbroath, among others.

After hanging up his boots, he joined the police but this week he will be putting his old skills to use when he takes a coaching session for school-age children at an activity evening being run by Police Scotland’s Tayside division.

The event is being staged with help from the armed forces, Dundee College and Asda, along with Robbie’s old club and their Dundee United rivals.

The free outdoor event will take place between 6pm and 9pm on Wednesday at the park behind Asda in Derwent Avenue.

Robbie and club coaches will be passing on their tips on improving ball skills and running games, including penalty shoot-outs and head tennis.

Chief Inspector David McIntosh said: “This is a community-led event for the benefit of young people in the Kirkton and surrounding area.

“We are delighted that our partners are supporting this event.

“Together we want to show people what is available to them right on their doorstep, get young people involved in activities and to enjoy the great community spirit.

“As it is the day before the World Cup starts, we expect a lot of interest in the sessions being provided by Robbie Raeside, Dundee United and Dundee football clubs. Here’s hoping for good weather.”

The activities will also include a cycle obstacle course and community police officer Steve Borland will be providing road safety advice.

Young cyclists will be able to have their bikes security marked for only £3.

Officers will issue a “cycle passport”, which contains a photograph of the bike, its description, model and serial numbers.

The passport can be produced to the police if the bicycle is ever stolen, making it easier for a found bike to be returned to its owner.

Also during the event, armed forces personnel and college staff will be providing information and advice on opportunities available in the workplace, inspiring teenagers to explore their career choices.

Staff from Asda will have a healthy-living stand, encouraging the children to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
