Courier independence roadshow visitors wrestle with a ‘hard choice’

Concerns about fairness and democracy were foremost as The Courier’s independence referendum roadshow visited Dalgety Bay and Rosyth on Wednesday.

Gary Letham, 46, said: “I hope it’s a Yes. It’s the right future for Scotland I want democracy that reflects the feelings of Scottish people. Right now we have no say.”

Roy Jarvis, 66, agreed but said he still wasn’t sure how he would vote.

“It’s a hard choice. I believe Scotland will be a fairer country under independence right now we don’t always get what we vote for.

“But I can see all points of view and I’m uncertain. I think I’d prefer the ‘devo max’ option.”

But Susan Averill, 57, said she thought the current system was fairer.

“I think we’re better together because the Scottish Government only seems interested in Scots, whereas Westminster is more concerned about everyone.”

Some were being swayed by economics.

Tina Jarvis, 64, said: “The only thing I’m scared about is I don’t know where Salmond would get all the money from.”

Andrew Lowe, 50, said: “Definitely no. I don’t think Scotland could survive on its own.”

In our informal poll in Dalgety Bay, 65% of people said they would vote No. In Rosyth, Yes was ahead with 58% of votes.
