A call for Angus volunteers at the Commonwealth Games has led to more than 250 people pledging their time and support.

The games will see the Queen’s Baton travel through the county on June 28, followed by the games shooting event at Barry Buddon from July 25-29.

The leadership organisation Voluntary Action Angus (VAA) was asked to provide 250 volunteers a target which has now been reached.

The chairwoman of the Commonwealth Games steering group congratulated those who have already signed up, and added that there is still room for more.

Councillor Jeanette Gaul said: “It is a wonderful honour for Angus to host the Queen’s Baton Relay and be a host venue for the Commonwealth Games and we would love for you to be involved.

“The success of these events relies heavily on an enthusiastic volunteer workforce.”

VAA development worker Megan Hassett said: “The response from local people has been fabulous but not surprising.

“We have people from all backgrounds and communities ready to give up their time for what will be a momentous and memorable occasion which will go down in history.

“All our volunteers will receive a special certificate commending their efforts and a badge to wear with pride, that they took part in such a fantastic celebration of volunteering.”

Morag McKenzie from VAA said: “For many years communities have enjoyed very high levels of volunteering and a strong culture of giving by local people, this is again evidence of the spirit of Angus.”

Mrs Gaul added: “I’d like to urge members of the public to donate a few hours of their time throughout the day or evening to help with a variety of roles available when the baton is in Angus on the June 28, or for the games from July 25-29.

“There will be additional training given to interested parties who cannot attend the sessions this week.”

Information and guidance for volunteers involved in the games will be held at VAA’s offices today and tomorrow and anyone still wishing to get involved can contact CommonwealthGames2014@angus.gov.uk.
