An anonymous donor has given more than £20,000 to support breast cancer research at Dundee University.
The benefactor agreed to double the sum raised by a ladies’ day event for Breakthrough Breast Cancer at Perth Racecourse.
That generosity means the total now earmarked for the charity’s research programme is £41,224.
Scientists are looking at whether it is possible to predict the effectiveness of pre-surgical chemotherapy.
Using high-powered imaging techniques and laboratory studies, which are unique to Ninewells Hospital and the university, the research team aims to reduce the surgery required.
Dr Sarah Vinnicombe, clinical senior lecturer in cancer imaging, accepted a cheque for the first half of the money.
“We are very grateful to everyone who has contributed so generously to this fundraising drive,” she said.
The money raised will be going to our programme, funded by Breakthrough, trying to determine what it is about tumours and the tissues surrounding them that tell us whether or not they will respond to chemotherapy.”
