Forfar boss Dick Campbell has revealed that the experienced Derek Young was keen to sign a deal with the Loons so he no longer had a 420-mile round trip to play his football with Queen of the South.
Young started his career at Aberdeen and he had two spells at the club as well as playing for Dunfermline, St Johnstone, Partick Thistle, Morton Grindavk in Iceland and the Doonhamers.
The former Scotland Under-21 player has continued to live in Aberdeen despite playing for the Dumfries club for the past two seasons. It will now be a shorter commute for Young, as Campbell explained.
“Derek has come in to join us and it is great to have such a hardworking and experienced player on board,” he said.
“Geography has worked in our favour and in Derek’s as he will be able to train with us as opposed to only spending half the week with his team-mates as he was doing with Queen of the South.”
Young, whose brother Darren has taken charge at Albion Rovers, is Forfar’s second signing of the close season.
Campbell has also brought back winger Danny Denholm after a season with Livingston.
The former Stirling University player was a star man for the Loons in 2012-13, scoring 11 goals before moving to Livi.
