Barcelona could be set for Fife return

Then Barca boss Pep Guardiola signs autographs at St Andrews in 2008.

The stars of Barcelona, and possibly even Luis Suarez, could be coming to St Andrews in a few weeks.

Sources in Spain suggest that the club’s sporting director, Andoni Zubizzareta, is considering setting up a pre-season training camp for the Catalan giants in Scotland.

And, as the St Andrews University facilities used by Dundee United have been their base here on previous occasions, the Fife town would be high on their list of potential locations again.

The club have fond memories of coming to this part of the world in the summers of 2007 and 2008, and Zubizzareta has suggested an old style build-up to the season to new manager Luis Enrique.

The dates proposed for their stay are July 28 to August 1 (Monday to Friday).

Barca have a friendly with Nice arranged for Saturday August 2, and it is not thought at this stage that they plan to fit in a game if they come to Scotland.

Wherever they set up their training base, there will be a number of the A-list stars attending.

With Spain’s early exit from the World Cup, all of their local players, including Xavi and Iniesta, will report back on July 24.

Whether Lionel Messi and Neymar will be in the group is more doubtful. Should Argentina and Brazil keep progressing in the tournament, August 11 has been pencilled in for their return.

There is even the possibility that Luis Suarez could be back on British shores. Barcelona have started talks with Liverpool with a view to an £80m transfer for the controversial striker.

His current four-month suspension handed out by Fifa for his infamous World Cup biting incident includes a ban on training with his club.

However, Suarez’s lawyer is putting together an appeal and it would not be a surprise if that part of the judgment is watered down in the coming days.

Dundee United and Barcelona have a long standing connection, dating back to the first time they met in the Fairs Cup in 1966.

When Barca trained at St Andrews locals flocked to the university for autographs and pictures with the likes of Ronaldinho, Messi, Pep Guardiola and Thierry Henry.
